The Migration Policy in Australia has always been at a center of discussion and debate ahead of every election. May it be the Policy Reforms in Skilled Labor Migration or any Asylum Seeker, each party has its own manifesto designed primarily to gather the maximum votes. The article is written to critically analyze the Migration Policy of two major political parties of Australia.
Labor Party Migration Policies
- Keeping in mind the upcoming elections, the Labor Party is raising a Slogan for 'Stronger Border Protection'.
- Detention Centers are currently consuming around 1 Billion Dollar on arrangement day to day affairs.
- Prime Minister Scott Morison has always felt pride in his action taken for stopping the Boats and kept a souvenir with the title 'I Stopped these Boats' engraved on it.
- The coalition government commenced Operation Sovereign Border to ban any ship stopping at the shore to transport illegal migration in year 2014.
- The government issued 'Temporary Protection Visas' on purely humanitarian grounds.
- The procedure for TPV's was made much more complex by introducing the concept of Renewal of these Visas encouraging them to reconfirm their Refugee Status at priority.
- Mr Morrison has also confirmed that he is not willing to increase Migrant Cap to wait and reassess the situation after the limit of 1,80,000 is reached. Despite a lot of pressure from Business Sector, the current government is not interested to increase Migrant Cap.
Liberal Party Migration Policies
- The party strongly believes that the Migration Policies needs a more serious consideration for their revision after taking into account every aspect in detail.
- The party's representative hinted last year for having a shift of their policy towards permanent settlements.
- The party further expressed their policy that if someone is invited in Australia for some work - he must be invited on a Permanent Migration Policy.
- They strongly suggest that the policy of issuing thousand of temporary Visas must be discontinued.
- The party gave a hint to further increase number of nurses at old age homes.
- In order to counter and balance Chinese Influence in Pacific Ocean, the policy for the pacific needs a deliberate consideration. The party claims that bad government policies to engage Solomon by giving them relaxation in Visa Schemes might have halted the Chinese- Solomon Islands Security Pact.
- The party supports the Operation Sovereign Border with a view to produce permanent residency to only those who landed before July 2013.
